I can literally feel my heart breaking.

I can’t write anymore today. I am so sickened by the elementary school shootings in Connecticut. My heart and prayers go out to all the children, teachers, and family affected by this senseless tragedy—during Christmas week, no less.

Yeah, now’s not the time to address gun control [note sarcasm].

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of meeting one of my literary heroes, Lois Lowry. I first encountered the great Ms. Lowry’s work in 5th grade when we read Number the Stars. Shortly after, I read The Giver, and haven’t looked at children’s literature in the same light since. Next semester I’ll be teaching both The Giver and its loosely related companion title, Son, to my children’s & YA literature graduate students at Rosemont College. I can’t wait for the class discussions on how and why these books forged and shaped the YA dystopia genre.

It’s official. Sometime in the midst of the hurricane, Random House and Penguin merged. I doubt this will become their logo, but how great/terrifying is it?
How long before we start to see classics reworked to include random penguins in them?
“Oh, Beth. Wherever did you get that penguin? Papa’s not going to like it,” Meg warned.
“I was going to go with Mr. Darcy, but this fellow is just as well dressed and has more personality,” Lizzy said, dreamily.
He stared intently at the green light on the opposite shore until suddenly, his reverie was interrupted by the noise of a fish flopping around on the dock. It was all Dapper could think of to comfort him.

And when he came to the place where the penguins are, they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws till Max said, Be still” and tamed them with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once. And they were frightened and called him the most wild penguin of all and made him king of all penguins.

Heartbreaking. Something really needs to be done about bullying. It has to stop. It hurts my heart that a 15-year old had to face this. As an adult who writes for teens, I feel like there is more we can do to stop it.

adrifts:

“Classic children’s stories are timeless windows into the human psyche. With their embedded kernels of life wisdom and lessons about our desires they can teach us much about what it means to be human. Christian Jackson, a “gun for hire in the design industry,” has created a personal project that beautifully distills the elements of these iconic stories down to their essential elements… still enough to be easily recognizable.”

These are definitely needs, not wants.
